Summary[]

While the Enterprise is helping in reheating the cooling magma core of Atrea IV, Juliana Tainer, married to one of the participating scientists, introduces herself as Noonien Soong's ex-wife and, in a manner of speaking, Data's mother. When pressed, she tearfully admits that she was against Data's creation in the first place. She also insisted on leaving the android behind when she and Soong fled from Omicron Theta, all because of fears he could become like evil Lore. On Atrea IV her husband is injured in a plasma cave. When Data joins her there, the instability forces them to jump from a cliff and her arm is severed, confirming his guess that she is an android. When Soong's real wife died, he implanted her memory into this new body, which imitates the human functions much more perfectly than Data's, so that even Juliana herself has no idea that she is an android. Data decides not to tell Juliana about her true nature, instead talking with his mother about Soong's great love for her. Juliana leaves the Enterprise happy, looking forward to her next visit with her son.

Errors and Explanations[]

Internet Movie Database[]

Revealing mistakes[]

  1. When Dr. Tainer leaves Data at Deanna's door, the door opens automatically without Data pressing a button or otherwise announcing himself. This could be a fault in the door's proximity sensor.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs[]

  1. Even after Data acknowledges Juliana as his 'mother', he still calls her Dr. Tainer from time to time. He does so only when talking to or referring to her in the presence of other people. It is conceivable that Data might deem it inappropriate to use a more intimate name for her on those occasions.

Plot holes[]

  1. It has been well established in previous installments that there were no survivors of the crystalline entity other than Noonian Soong (who slipped away unknown), yet Dr. Tainer says she escaped with others on a shuttle craft. Perhaps Noonian added memories of other survivors to avoid Juliana suffering from survivor guilt.
  2. Data was talking to the holographic Dr. Soong from a chip placed in Data's android mother. The holographic chip contained information about how Data's android mother left Dr. Soong. This information could not have made it into the chip because after Data's android mother left Dr. Soong there would be no opportunity for Dr. Soong to add it. Possibly a side effect of an adaptive program added to the Juliana android's positronic brain, created as a precaution. Dxdynamite 03:22, 16 November 2021 Or possibly, a recall device (as seen in Brothers) implanted in Juliana, or even (as in the Strange New Worlds book series) where Juliana had told Noonien of her intentions to leave him, and before leaving he added some extra programming to her chip at the last minute.

Ex Astris Scientia[]

  1. Noonien Soong is said to have built Juliana in a few days. Yeah right. A complete android with revolutionary and completely untested new technologies such as tear ducts, sweat glands, subdermal veins and capillaries, fake biosignals and most obviously the transfer of Juliana's human brain structure into a positronic matrix. Not impossible for a genius!
